Fiat Set To Provide Diesel Engines To Premier Rio

The Premier Rio is India's only compact SUV and is available with both petrol and diesel engines. However Premier did not have a highly efficient diesel engine and was not keen to invest in developing a new one. Hence it is now looking at the 1.3-litre turbo diesel diesel engine that is already available in the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Tata Indica.
Confirming the talks between Premier and Fiat, Chairman and Managing Director of Premier, Maitreya Doshi has said: “ We have been in talks with Fiat for quite some time. There are a couple of vehicles in Italy right now which are being tested; once the technical integration is ready, we will enter into a component supply agreement with Fiat."
Fiat India which has seen its sales decline considerably is keen to get any sort of business and will be very happy to supply engines to Premier. Fiat has been operating in India since 1997 as a joint venture partner of Tata Motors but the results have not been very encouraging. Fiat has now decided to open its own independent showrooms to spur sales.
Premier has become a low key carmaker with just one model under its kitty. It now wants to push the Rio's performance and what better way than to have a powerful yet fuel efficient diesel engine. Fiat's turbo diesel engine has been appreciated by customers and carmakers alike. It is also planning to expand its dealer network soon.
