Nissan Still Interested In Bajaj Low Cost Car

Bajaj ULC
Nissan, the Japanese carmaker which recently launched the Sunny sedan in India has revealed that it was still in talks with the Indian two wheeler manufacturer on the Bajaj ULC. This is in sharp contrast to several media reports that stated both Nissan and Renault were not interested in Bajaj's low cost car as they though the prototype did not match their standards.

Bajaj, Nissan and Renault had announced that Bajaj would be developing the ultra low cost car and Renault and Nissan would be marketing the car at a global level in 2008. The two carmakers are said to be unsatisfied with the quality of the product and had stated they would walk out of their agreement if the Bajaj ULC did not match their standards.

Nissan Motor Company Vice-President Corporate (India, Africa & Middle East) Giles Normand has said that Nissan was still holing talks with Bajaj and would soon make a joint announcement. He has not specifically said when this joint announcement will be made.

The Bajaj Ultra Low Cost Car is being considered as a competitor of the Tata Nano.. It was expected to be priced lower that Rs.2 lakhs when the project was unveiled. However commodity price increases in the past two years has meant the cost will increase much to the discomfort of Bajaj. Now with Nissan expressing its interest in the project we expect some sort of development will happen soon and a competitor for the Nano will emerge from India.
