Maruti Strike Ends, Losses Pegged Rs.2,000 Crore

The strike at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant was the third in five months. The first strike was held in June and carried on for 13 days. The second strike was started on 31st August and it went on for more than a month ending on 1st October. The strike was started after the management introduced a good conduct bond that had to be signed by all workers. The strike ended only after the workers accepted to sign the bond.
The recent and third strike started within a week of the second strike ending. But this time the strike was different as the workers of Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant also received support from the workers of Suzuki Powertrain and Suzuki Motorcycles. This reduced the supply of engines to Maruti Suzuki's Gurgaon plant too, severely affecting production.
This is one of the primary reason why this strike has had a bigger impact on the carmaker than the previous two instances. Maruti Suzuki's management which had previously taken a tough stand against the workers has mellowed down following this huge loss. The management has now decided to reinstate 64 suspended workers who are not facing serious charges of misconduct. It has also stated it would reinstate 1,200 contract workers slowly once the second unit in Manesar becomes operational.
The 30 workers who are facing serious charges of misconduct will continue to be suspended. The carmaker has also imposed a penalty of one day's salary on all workers. Further it has stated that it would not be paying salary for any of the days workers were on strike. These steps appear to be cost saving means in the face of the huge loss.
The company has now set up a team of people consisting representatives from the management and the workers to sort out any remaining issues. The committee"s working will be monitored by a labour department official.
