Maruti Suzuki To Develop Its Own Global Car

The carmaker which had earlier reported it was developing a new 800cc engine for a new small car has said it was aiming to develop a new global car by 2017. Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Managing Executive Officer (R&D) Mr I.V Rao while speaking to reporters said: “Our ultimate aim is to develop a car for the global market. With our new R&D centre at Rohtak getting ready, we will start working on a global car."
Maruti Suzuki's global car will be developed with some assistance from Suzuki Motor Corp. Maruti Suzuki engineers were previously involved in the development of Suzuki's global cars such as the Swift and Ritz. Maruti Suzuki's global car would be aimed at the Japanese and European markets. The carmaker has not set a specific time frame for the global car and has only said the year 2017 was its target.
Maruti Suzuki is investing Rs.1,500 crores in its R&D centre in Rohtak. This is Suzuki's first research centre outside Japan. This new division is already working on the new 800cc engine to be used on a new small car. The carmaker has said this small car will be built on the platform of the Alto.
Maruti Suzuki India Managing Director and CEO Shinzo Nakanishi while commenting about the company's increased focus on local research and development had said: "The growth of the Indian market deserves additional and localised R&D capability that can serve India even more closely."
Maruti Suzuki has doubled its budget allocation for research and development this year and has also decided to increase its R&D staff by 20 per cent. The highest selling Indian carmaker is now trying to become an automotive research hub for Suzuki. The global car from Maruti Suzuki is a true test of the carmaker's capabilities.
