India To Set Up Agency To Recall Unsafe Cars

The decision to set up a road safety agency is seen as a result of several reports of defective cars being manufactured in India. There have been several incidents involving cars catching fire, brake failures and other mechanical issues that have lead to death, damage and loss.
Department of heavy industries joint secretary Ambuj Sharma is quoted to have said: “We are contemplating a national-level body that will govern the technical and safety aspects in the fast-growing sector that is expected to double in the next five years." This new National Automotive Board, will monitor the safety of all passenger vehicles.
India does not have a recall policy as such and carmakers recall their cars as and when they find tell tale faults. Maruti Suzuki had recalled a batch of its diesel cars to rectify a fault in their engines. Honda Siel had recently recalled City sedans to repair a faulty power window system. All these recalls have been voluntary.
There have been several calls for an agency that will mandate car safety. The number of casualties due to road accidents are the highest in India. If the new safety agency is set up with full powers, carmakers will be on their toes and passengers' safety will not be compromised.
The National Automotive Board will be a single window agency for the auto industry and it will be involved in crash testing vehicles, rating safety features and developing safety guidelines.
