If you are guessing, we might be suggesting that you need to hire a driver to drive you around. But here is a car that is by itself the driver. Researchers at the Free University in Berlin have developed a new car that is able to drive around traffic by itself. The self driving car is already on the streets of Berlin for testing and it is being called as the car of the future.
The researchers have used a Volkswagen Passat as the test vehicle. They have fitted advanced communication and navigation technologies such as satellite navigation, laser scanners, cameras and computer electronics. The cameras and laser scanners are fitted to both the front and rear bumpers.
The researchers say the car can respond to its environment more quickly than humans. It can recognise other cars, pedestrians buildings and trees around it. It can also recognise traffic signals and respond accordingly.
Scientists have been working on the VW Passat since four years. Several groups of scientists have provided inputs to this driverless car. Self driving car technology is not very new.. Google, the global search engine is using self driving Toyota Prius cars that are travelling around Nevada in the USA.
