Coming Soon: Nissan Sunny Diesel Sedan

Nissan India has confirmed the launch of the diesel variant of the Sunny sedan later this year. The Japanese carmaker launched the Sunny yesterday in Mumbai with a starting price of Rs.5.78 lakhs for the petrol variant. Nissan had surprised every one by not launching a diesel version of the Sunny.

The Nissan Sunny is built on the same platform used ion the Micra and we had expected that the Sunny will also get similar powertrain options available with the Micra. However Nissan India only launched the petrol variant on 20th September.

Demand for diesel cars in India has increased steeply following repeated increase in petrol prices. Diesel prices are still controlled by the government and hence have remained cheap. There is a huge difference between the price of petrol and diesel and and the increased fuel economy of diesel cars has also lead to high demand.

Such a scenario meant several carmakers launching diesel as well as petrol variants at once. Maruti Suzuki launched both the petrol and diesel variants on August 19th. There are some carmakers who have not even launched petrol variants of some of their models. Volkswagen has only launched the diesel variant of the Jetta as well as the Passat.
