Now Its Hyundai's Turn To Face Strikes

The workers are also demanding the reinstatement of some workers who were dismissed during earlier agitations. The HMIEU is affiliated to CITU and is keen to get its demands met by Hyundai Motor India's management.
This new s reminds us the three separate strikes at Marut Suzuki's Manesar plant. The strikes have had a huge impact on Maruti Suzuki's sales. A strike at Hyundai can be equally damging, if not even more. Hyundai Motors exports about 40 per cent of its production to ther countries and any strike will have an impact on this.
The workers from the HMIEU have sought official recognition from Hyundai's management. Hyundai has said the recognized union was the United Union of Hyundai Employees. The workers have been boycotting canteen services since a week demanding recognition of HMIEU. The workers have said if there is no fruitful result in the near future a trike will become unavoidable.
Hyundai Motor India has on its part denied any possibility of a strike. It said it recognized the United Union of Hyundai Employees, which represents 75 per cent oof its workers and no new union will be accepted.
All these instances certainly mirror the events that occurred before the strikes at Maruti Suzuki. If Hyundai has to avoid huge losses, it must learn lessons from Maruti Suzuki rather than going for a first hand learning experience. Hyundai has already suffered a production loss of 3,800 cars last year when workers went on a two day strike.
