Mahindra Planning To Build Low Cost SUV

This Mahindra SUV is codenamed as S101 and is expected to be a shorter than 4 metres in length. This will keep the price of the mini SUV low due to reduced excise duties. The Mahindra mini SUV is expected to be priced around RS.4 lakhs to Rs.6 lakhs according to some estimates but some have pegged the value between Rs.3 Lakhs and Rs.4 lakhs.
Such a price tag will be revolutionary for an SUV. India's smallest and cheapest SUV is the Premier Rio which is priced at Rs.4.7 lakhs. If Mahindra does manage to bring out a mini SUV, there is no doubt it will have a huge impact on our car market.
The Indian car market is particularly skewed in favour of SUVs and the mini SUV will help change it. The mini SUVs currently sold in India are premium products and are comparatively expensive. Some models that we can name are the Skoda Yeti, Jeep Wrangler and the Nissan Juke. The Skoda Yeti is the only such car sold in India it carries a price tag of Rs.14 lakhs.
This new mini SUV from Mahindra is expected to be built at Mahindra Chakan plant where it currently builds the recently unveiled XUV 500. The new SUV will be the first joint development project between Mahindra and Ssangyong. We believe, a Ssangyong branded clone of the Mahindra S101 will also be built and sold in South Korea.
The mini SUV is expected to be powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. Mahindra is yet to make an official statement on this new model. However, Rajan Wadhera, chief executive, technology, product development & sourcing, M&M has said the company has completed development of a new platform that comes under the compact segment.
