Why You Should NOT Buy A Diesel Car

Petrol Versus Diesel
The demand for diesel cars has increased so dramatically that carmakers are not able to respond to the huge increase. The better fuel economy and the marked difference between the price of the diesel and Petrol has put the diesel powered car at an advantageous position. Several car buyers are swayed just by the above mentioned reasons and are buying diesel cars even without considering the pros and cons of their decision. Auto.oneindia takes a look at why and who should buy a diesel car.

A diesel Car is at least over Rs.80,000 more expensive than a similarly specified petrol variant. A car buyer will be paying more than he actually thinks he is if he is taking a car loan. The additional price premium of a diesel car will not only add to the cost, but also increase the EMI and the interest rate (in some cases). Considering a minimum EMI of Rs. 1,000 per lakh, buying a diesel car will mean you will paying a more hefty EMI.

Car buyers feel the additional cost of a diesel car can be offset by the increased mileage and low fuel costs. However, carmakers such as Toyota and Maruti Suzuki are trying to educate customers that a diesel car will not be financially viable unless they run the car for more than 2,000 kilometres a month. A known fact that carmakers do not expose the buyer to is the service costs of a diesel car. Diesel cars have always been expensive to maintain. You need to have an oil change every time you get your diesel car serviced. But a petrol car does not need that.

Diesel is not a freely burning fuel and leaves behind more unburnt soot particles than petrol. This will result in engine parts getting blocked and can get damaged over a period of time. Petrol on the other hand is a clean burning fuel and car and does not cause such damage to engine parts.

If you happen to buy a car for the long run, a petrol car is always a better option. Although diesel engine technology has improved over the years, it still has not managed to improve the reliability that will match a petrol engine.
