Maruti Official Confirms Gujarat Plant

Maruti Suzuki, India's top selling carmaker has said Gujarat is the ideal location for its new manufacturing plant. Company officials had previously visited several sites and ha d also spoken with Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi to finalise a site for a new plant.

Maruti Suzuki General Manager (West Zone) S N Burman is quoted to have said: “ Gujarat shall be a preferred location to set up a manufacturing plant, but nothing has been finalised yet. We are still exploring the possibilities for our next plant and we have seen sites in Tamil Nadu and Haryana."

He added Maruti Suzuki officials had been in talks with the Gujarat government as well as other state governments. He added that a final decision on the plant was not been made. Maruti Suzuki has two car plants in Manesar in Gurgaon with an annual production capacity of 8.5 lakh units.

Mr Burman made his comments during the launch of the new Swift hatchback in Ahmedabad. He reiterated the success of the new Swift by saying Maruti Suzuki had already received more than 50,000 bookings for the new model.

There have been indicators that Maruti Suzuki has finalized a site in the town of Sanand, right next to the Tata Nano plant.
