A gearbox is the tool that transmits the engines torque to the wheels of a vehicle.. The gearbox as the name suggests has several wheels with each wheel indicating a gear. The gears in the gear box is shifted by using a clutch. A manual gearbox is a type of gearbox where gears are shifted by hand using a gear lever in cars and using a hand lever in motorcycles.
Gears determine the amount of power needed to accelerate a vehicle. While lower gears have more power and hence improve acceleration, higher gears sustain the speed for a longer duration while reducing fuel consumption. While this is a one time cost, the running costs of a car with automatic gearbox is higher due to higher fuel consumption.
- An automatic transmission can provide you optimum fuel economy on long drives only. If you are someone who travel between cities that it is ideal but if you happen to drive short distances within a city the manual gearbox will be a better option.
