Hindustan Motors Will Not Unveil New Ambassador
More startling news from reports is about Hindustan Motors' Japanese partner Mitsubishi also pulling out from the show. The two carmakers have been in a partnership since 1998 but have nothing to show in terms of new products. HM is yet to completely develop its new Ambassador. Both companies have suffered losses and the additional cost of participating in the Auto Expo would have become a burden.
While Hindustan Motors has stuck to its one model, the ambassador, Mitsubishi has been selling its SUVs in India. The Japanese carmaker which was expected to show its latest small car Mirage but by withdrawing its participation it will take a long time for us to see the Mirage. The Mirage small car was on display at the recent Tokyo Auto Show.
HM and Mitsubishi have not been able see growth even when the Indian car market was booming. The Japanese carmaker had thought it could boost its presence in India by launching the Mirage in India. But the current situation appears to be a difficult. With losses mounting it needs to have a bolder strategy and it appears to have decided to move away from Hindustan Motors.
Hindustan Motors is also in troubled waters. It was widely expected to launch its new Ambassador in the Auto Expo. But it appears it is not going to happen soon. The Ambassador has a fan following in India but that has not translated in to sales. Mitsubishi on its part has not entered the entry level or mid level segments where sales are higher.
