Hyundai Eyeing Maruti 800 Spot With Eon

The Hyundai Eon is a small car that has been specially designed as a low cost car. This will be marketed as a car that is better than the Maruti Suzuki Alto and yet priced just about the same. According to reports the Hyundai Eon will be costing just over Rs.2 lakhs. The price will be distinctly higher than the Tata Nano, a car that has lost its image primarily for its low price.
Hyundai motors officials have said the Eon will be a car that will replace the Maruti 800 effortlessly. The Maruti 800 has been slowly phased out from the past two years due to emission norms. The Eon was previously code named as the H800 indicating its 800cc engine.
Hyundai which has been competing with Maruti Suzuki never really tried to pose a challenge to the Alto. The Santro, the carmaker's cheapest selling car in India, competes with the Wagon R. The Eon is the first attempt by Hyundai to really take on Maruti Suzuki's might. Previous reports have said the Eon will be launched any time this October with deliveries beginning soon.
We believe the Eon is a result of Maruti Suzuki's increasing market share in rural markets. Hyundai has primarily been an urban car brand and it has not penetrated in to rural markets that well. Following a steady drop in sales, Hyundai decided to tap this rural market and build a low cost car that will also do well in cities.
Incidentally Maruti Suzuki has already started working an a replacement of the Maruti 800. The new car will be powered by a 800 cc engine that is being currently developed in India. Maruti Suzuki has denied the new car will be a new Maruti 800. It has stated this new car will be another entry level car along with the Alto.
