VW Unveils New 2012 Beetle R Concept

Volkswagen Beetle R
Volkswagen has unveiled the latest iteration of its classic Beetle at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The new car has been named as just the Beetle R Concept and not as the New Beetle as the previous version. The 2012 Beetle gets a slightly sporty design and the R name hints at a more powerful engine.

Volkswagen has described the Beetle R Concept as the sportiest Beetle ever. It is powered by a 2.0TSI petrol engine that generates whopping 197bhp. Some say the power output can actually be as much as 266bhp as found in the Golf R and the Scirocco R.

The Beetle R concept can be differentiated with the regular Beetle through its larger 20 inch alloy wheels, flared wheel arches, redesigned front and rear bumpers and a larger rear spoiler. VW has painted the Beetle R in what it calls Serious Grey to indicate its sporty performance. Further the Beetle R's sportiness is accentuated by the motor sport inspired front bumper which has air intakes.

The Beetle R's interior features black Nappa sports seats, brushed aluminium pedals, specially styled instrument cluster and carbon fibre trim.

It is yet unknown if the Beetle R concept will reach the production line. Some say this new car is to impress Volkswagen's male customers. The New Beetle was considered too feminine and more than 70 per cent of its buyers were women.
