Is Maruti Suzuki Developing A Diesel Wagon R?
A diesel powered Wagon R is possibly a brilliant idea for Maruti Suzuki. At a time when it is struggling to sell models that are available only with petrol engines, it is a better option to add diesel engines to your models rather than just hope people will also buy your petrol cars. The demand for diesel cars continues at the current rate, it is only prudent that all car models are available with both petrol and diesel engines.
The Wagon R will not be setting a new trend if it gets a diesel engine as it will be not the first diesel powered small car. Chevrolet began the trend by launching the diesel Beat with a one litre engine. Reports on the diesel wagon R say the hatchback from Maruti will also get a one-litre diesel engine. It will be a 970cc three cylinder engine capable of developing 58PS and 150Nmof torque.
This engine is pretty much the same diesel engine that we find in the Swift and the Ritz but is one cylinder short. The engine will be smaller to suit the smaller price tag of the Wagon R. The diesel pot is expected to boost the Wagon R's mileage to a whopping 25kmpl making it India's most fuel efficient hatchback.
The Wagon R will also possibly be India's cheapest diesel car too. The top variant of a petrol Wagon R is priced at Rs.4.20 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) Even if Maruti charges a premium of Rs.75,000 for the diesel Wagon R it's top variant might still cost less than Rs.5 lakhs while the entry level model beiing priced just over Rs.4 lakhs.
The diesel Wagon R will be the best option for people who want a Maruti Suzuki diesel car but are unable to afford the Swift Diesel or the Ritz Diesel.
