Hyundai To Build Sonata & Santa Fe In India
Sales of these two models have not been very high owing to their high price. The Sonata is Hyundai answer to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. This car is a spacious and powerful sedan and is considered as Hyundai"s flagship model in India. The sonata"s price of Rs.17.73 lakhs was found to be expensive for a Hyundai. But if the car is built in India as a CKD, the lower import tax will reduce its price and make it more attractive to buyers.
The Hyundai Santa Fe SUV is also in the same position as the Sonata. Its space, seating capacity, power and performance make it a very durable SUV but its price tag make people compare it with premium SUVs such as the Audi Q7 and the BMW X5 and here the Santa Fe looses out. If it is built in India it is expected to offer a stiff competition to the above mentioned SUVs and also other SUVs such as the Renault Koleos and the Mahindra XUV 500.
Hyundai has already started some local production of the Santa Fe in august but it will move to a fuller scale next year. We can see reduction of Rs5 lakhs to Rs.7 lakhs in the price of the SUV. The Korean carmaker has said these two models will see an upward swing in sales once local production begins.
