Suzuki Seeks VW's Hybrid Technology Or Divorce

Suzuki Volkswagen Aliiance
The longstanding dispute between Suzuki Motorcorp and Volkswagen took another turn today after the Japanese carmaker demanded access to Volkswagen's hybrid technology within weeks or risk facing legal action. This is the latest spike in the battle between the two carmakers who had entered an alliance to share technology.

Suzuki has served a notice to Volkswagen according to which Volkswagen must provide Suzuki access to its hybrid engine technology within weeks. It has said the alliance was signed to share technology and accused Volkswagen of not following the terms of the alliance. Suzuki has asked Volkswagen to sell back its 19.9 per cent stake in Suzuki if it does not honour the notice.

Volkswagen has said it was considering legal options to respond to Suzuki's notice. Volkswagen had previously accused Suzuki of breaching the terms of the alliance when Suzuki bought diesel engines from Fiat. Both carmakers joined hands two years ago to take advantage of each other's positives. Suzuki had the inexpensive small car technology while Volkswagen had offered its hybrid engine technology.

The latest salvo by Suzuki against Volkswagen adds to the tension between the two carmakers. Volkswagen has insisted that it was still interested in the alliance and has said it would not sell its stake in Suzuki. Suzuki feels this alliance was harmful to its existence as an independent carmaker.
