Maruti Strike Is Now Illegal, Govt Hits Unions

In its first action against the striking workers, the Haryana government has said it would cancel the registration of workers unions of the Suzuki Powertrain as well as Suzuki Motorcycle. Workers of these plants are striking work in support of workers from Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant.
Maruti Suzuki has also approached the High Court of Chandigarh to evict the workers who have been inside the Manesar plant since 8th October.
Labour department officials have said they have served notices to the unions and they were yet to respond. They have also filed a case against the workers seeking prosecution. The Labour department has handed the striking workers a notice for breaching the agreement signed by them and has given them 48 hours time to respond.
When contacted, Suzuki Powertrain India Employees Union (SPIEU) President Sube Singh Yadav said: "We have not heard about any such development. If the government has taken this step, then now we will not end our strike till our union is registered again."
Suzuki Motorcycle India Employees Union (SMIEU) President Anil Kumar said the union is scheduled to meet Labour Department officials tomorrow and it will discuss the issue then.
