Maruti Cuts Production After Sales Crash

With inventory levels increasing consistently, a cut in production became imminent. Maruti Suzuki has even reduced the production of its best selling Alto hatchback. The carmaker's chairman RC Bhargava while disclosing its decision said the Swift and the Swift DZire were the only models whose production was not reduced. He said: “ We are adjusting our production with market conditions. There are some models which are not moving fast enough given the sluggish demand. So, we have tweaked the production schedule to keep our inventory at the normal level."
Maruti Suzuki has already stopped production of the current Swift and has already started building the soon to be launched new Swift. The Swift DZire is by far the highest selling sedan in the country. Demand for the diesel variant of the DZire is so high that the company had to stop exports of its diesel engines to Hungary.
Car sales have decreased sharply this July and Maruti Suzuki suffered the bulk of the damage as it sell more than half the cars sold in India. With several car buyers postponing car purchases due to high interest rates carmakers are not expecting an immediate improvement in sales.
