Skoda Confirms Citigo Launch In India

Mr. Vahland has visited India to oversee the launch of the Skoda Rapid, the carmaker's latest entry level sedan that is based on the VW Vento.
Skoda had earlier said the Citigo will be car focused for Europe. The car will be its cheapest car and will be its new entry level model. The Citigo will be necessary for Skoda in Europe as new stricter emission norms will be enforced that will require carmakers to reduce their total fleet emissions. A small car such as the Citigo is ideal as it will deliver high fuel economy along with low emissions.
Skoda India which has been operating in our country since over a decade has not been able to become a volume carmaker. The Fabia has always been considered as premium hatchback despite its recent reduction in price. Hence Skoda India believes the Citigo is an ideal small car to increase volumes.
The Citigo is just a rebadged Volkswagen Up. The Volkswagen Up was first unveiled in the Frankfurt Auto Show. VW has developed a four door version of the Up specially for the Indian market. If the Citigo also makes it to India, there will be lot of internal competition from within the Volkswagen Group.
It is highly unlikely that the Citigo will be launched in India simultaneously along with the VW Up. But the possibility of the Citigo coming to India cannot be ruled out. We expect the Citigo to be priced lower than the Up as it has been a practice in the Volkswagen Group to price similar VW cars slightly higher than Skoda.
