There Is No Question Of Compromise: Suzuki

Maruti Suzuki has found support from its parent company on the current strike at the carmaker's Manesar plant. Osamu Suzuki, the chairman of Suzuki Motor Company has condemned the indiscipline at the plant and has stated any form of indiscipline will not be tolerated in Japan as well as in India.

Suzuki, who is in India to take part in the company's 30th annual shareholders' meeting, said in a statement that Maruti Suzuki would not accept any indiscipline in the company. The company has already dismissed 21 workers.

Mr Suzuki's statement clearly indicates that Maruti Suzuki will not be negotiating with striking workers or consider a compromise. The carmaker had mad it mandatory for all its workers at Manesar to sign a good conduct bond before they start work on August 29th. Most workers refused to sign it and work came to a standstill.

The carmaker has accused workers of intentionally damaging cars built at the plant. With production coming to a halt, the management was forced to hire more than 200 trainees and has brought in several engineers and supervisors from its plant in Gurgaon.

Production has slowly improved and Maruti Suzuki has built 340 Swift hatchbacks on Friday out of which 90 were built at Gurgaon after part of the Swift's production was moved to Maruti's bigger plant.

The strike at Manesar is turning out to be more expensive than the 13 day strike that hampered production in Manesar in June. The carmaker had suffered losses totalling Rs.420 crores in July and the losses now are being pegged at Rs.550 crore after a production loss of 11,000 units.
