Maruti Fires 10 Workers; Suspends 5 More

Maruti Suzuki Strike
Maruti Suzuki India has taken strict action against its workers in Manesar in response to the flash strike that started on Friday, Oct 7th. The carmaker's spokesperson said 10 workers were dismissed, 5 trainees were terminated and 10 more workers were suspended. This action was in response to violent incidents inside the plant on Friday.

The carmaker went on to say it had rescued more than 100 workers on Sunday who were held forcefully inside the plant by striking workers. It had also brought out 355 workers on Saturday with the help of local police. These workers were allegely beaten up by striking workers. Maruti Suzuki has now said the number of striking workers has come down from Friday. More than 170 workers have not joined the strike since Friday itself.

Maruti Suzuki has said the workers have breached an agreement signed between the carmaker and the workers in the presence of Haryana government officials. Haryana's labour department officals are now trying to resolve this issue. A senior official said: “We are trying to solve the issue within the contours of the October 1 agreement which was agreed to by all workers as well as the Maruti management. There is no scope for fresh protest as all issues were worked out and agreed upon by all the concerned parties."

Maruti Suzuki's troubles with striking workers are expected to continue further as the Haryana Government is busy with the Hissar assembly election. The Indian carmaker has suffered severely in the past three months due to strikes at Manesar. Waiting periods of many of its models have increased substantially and sales have also dropped.

Maruti Suzuki's image has also taken a beating as it has not been able to deliver cars as promised before. It is now facing a possibility of huge cancellations of bookings as buyers would prefer to buy a car from another brands rather than wait. The carmaker has to resolve its issues as quickly as possible or risk losing its market share.
