World's Oldest Car Auctioned For $4.6 million

RM Auctions has reported that it has sold the 1884 De Dion Bouton et Trepardoux Dos-a-Dos Steam Runabout, the world's oldest running car for a record $4.62 million. The auction of the Dion Bouton started with a price of $500,000 but moved quickly to $4.2 million. The final buyer had to pay $4.62 million as he was charged a 10 per cent more due to a buyer's premium.The new buyer will be the classic car's fifth owner.

The 1884 De Dion Bouton et Trepardoux Dos-a-Dos Steam Runabout is a small car despite its rather long name. It was commissioned by a French entrepreneur and has a very special racing history too. The world's oldest running car is also the world's first car to win a motor race. It is another fact that the car did not even have a single rival in the race.

The price generated for the Dion Bouton has surprised several classic car experts. The car is quite unique for it is the oldest running steam powered car and has survived two world wars.
