Skoda Citigo, Is VW Up Twin For Europe Only?

Skoda Citigo
Skoda, the Czech subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group has released pictures of the Citigo, its latest small car based on the recently unveiled Volkswagen Up. Volkswagen had earlier stated that similar cars will be developed by Skoda and Seat in the Near Future. The Citigo is of more importance to us in India as Skoda is already an established brand and Seat isn't.

It is yet unclear if the Skoda Citigo will be sold in India as Volkswagen has already unveiled a five door Up specially made for India at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Skoda might bring the Citigo to India only after the Up is established in terms of sales.

Volkswagen usually prices its cars sli8ghtly higher than Skoda's cars in the similar segments and if it follows the same practice, the Skoda Citigo will be cheaper than the Volkswagen Up. The Skoda Fabia is Skoda India's cheapest offering and the Citigo will replace it if it does make its way to India.

In the present situation the only new car to come from the stables of Skoda India will be the new Lauretta. The Lauretta will be the placed in the category that has been left empty by the end of the Octavia.

The Citigo is expected to be unveiled in the UK in 2012 and the design indicates the traditional Skoda lines and grille. The logo is placed on top of the grille rather than in the middle. It is expected to be powered by a one-litre 59bhp engine. Skoda is also considering an all electric version of the Citigo. The Citigo will be priced at about £7,000 making it one of the cheapest cars from the Volkswagen Group in the UK.
