Maruti Workers Go On Strike Again

Production at Manesar had not even reached normal levels this week. The workers decided to go on a strike at about 4 PM according to Maruti Suzuki. They went on a sit in and stopped work immediately. The carmaker has said this strike is illegal and described it as a breach of faith by the workers who had signed the good conduct bond last week.
In a major set back to Maruti Suzuki, workers from the Suzuki Powertrain India Private Ltd and Suzuki Castings Ltd also decided to go on strike to support their colleagues in the car plant. The carmaker on its part has stated the casual workers will be absorbed in to work only after full production resumed. The carmaker is slowly increasing production and will soon begin work at its second unit in Manesar.
The casual workers are expected to be part of the second plant next month. The carmaker was forced to use some of the facilities in the new unit in September to accommodate more production which had come to a standstill during the strike. Maruti Suzuki which had earlier planned to open the second unit in October has got back to its schedule and has added the production here will begin as planned earlier.
Strikes at Maruti Suzuki have severely damaged the image of India's largest carmaker. With waiting periods for the Swift crossing over eight months, several car buyers are ow opting for more expensive but quickly available options such as the Skoda Fabia, Volkswagen Polo, Honda Jazz, With the arrival of cheaper alternatives such as the Honda Brio and the Toyota Etios, The Swift should expect some tough times in the future.
