Mahindra has said it would provide its Scorpio SUVs to be used as intervention and support vehicles during the race weekend. Mahindra has signed a five year agreement with Buddh International Circuit to provide support vehicles for all sporting events at the race track. Mahindra will be providing 25 Scorpios to be used in the Formula One race.
10 Scorpio VLX models and 15 Scorpio Getaways will be used at the circuit. Mahindra's adventure initiatives such as The Great Escape, The Monastery Escape and off-road rallies will be publicised during events when the Scorpios are used.
Vivek Nayar, Senior Vice President, Marketing Automotive division of Mahindra & Mahindra Pvt Limited while speaking to reporters said: “We are proud and privileged to be associated with the BIC. The role of our vehicles would be to rescue, support and salvage race cars in emergencies. We are witnessing history being created and you will see motor sport will change in the country with the coming of F1."
The Mahindra Scorpios to be used in the Formula One Grand Prix have not received any special modifications. The carmaker has only added fire fighting equipment.
This is not the first instance Mahindra has associated itself with racing. It already has its own racing team in the MotoGP.
Other auto makers who are already involved with the Indian Grand Prix are Mercedes-Benz and Hero MotoCorp.
