Mercedes To Launch 10 New Models To Counter BMW

Mercedes-Benz India Director (Sales & Marketing) Debashis Mitra while confirming the news on new model launches said: “ Our entire product portfolio relevant to the Indian market will come here in the next three years... I think, we will have 9 to 10 new brands by then." The new products will also include the company's smaller cars such as the A-Class and the B-Class.
Mercedes-Benz has accused BMW of selling stripped out models at a lower price tag to boost its sales. The Daimler owned car maker is of the opinion that BMW launched lower priced versions of the 3-Series and the 5-series without several features which are usually standard in other international markets.
Mercedes-Benz has also said BMW was able to get the No 1 spot in India by selling premium SUVs, a sector that Mercedes-Benz has not ventured in India. With the launch of new models Mercedes-Benz believes it can deliver a credible competition to BMW.
Mercedes-Benz and BMW have had a fierce competition in India as well as in other countries. Mercedes-Benz entered India much earlier than BMW and was the market leader until 2009. BMW gained an advantage over its German counterpart by launching the X% and X3 premium SUVs.
BMW has countered Mercedes-accusations of having stripped out models. It attributes its success in India for its brand positioning and the its success in attracting buyers from all age groups. Andreas Schaaf BMW India President said: “Our cars are positioned to attract all generations of people who aspire to have a BMW. We have no problem in selling cars to uncles, fathers, mothers and pops. Maybe that is the reason for our success." BMW is confident it will retain its market leadership.
