Maruti Pays Huge Sums To Suspended Workers

According to reports, two union leaders who were spearheading the strikes at Manesar – Shiv Kumar and Sonu Gujjar have each been paid Rs.40 lakhs as a severance package. The other suspended workers were shocked by their decision to resign but then decided to follow them when they were also offered severance packages of Rs.16 lakhs.
Both Shiv Kumar and Sonu Gujjar were the first ones to demand a separate workers union in Manesar. They were part of the negotiations between workers representatives and Maruti Suzuki's management. It is indeed shocking that after causing so much damage to Maruti Suzuki, these union leaders end up getting huge sums of money while thousands of workers lost more than a month's salary for supporting the strike.
The fact that Sonu Gujjar has vacated his house and is no where to be seen in Manesar is another sign that the deal between him and Maruti Suzuki was struck at least some days before. These two union leaders have easily made a fast buck for themselves and India's leading carmaker is now in a tough situation.
Maruti Suzuki would have been forced to severe links with these workers as it does not want another labour unrest anytime in the future. The carmaker has essentially removed the leadership of the Manesar workers, thus postponing any possible unionism inside the car plant. The carmaker is desperate to ensure there is a smooth production in Manesar.
