Honda Brio Cheap But Not Safe

Honda has always prided itself for building safe cars across the globe and the Japanese carmaker ensured all its models had air bags irrespective of price. However, the price sensitive Indian car buyer might have forced Honda to deviate from its policy.
Honda Siel Cars India, the Indian subsidiary of Honda might try to keep the price of the new Brio by removing air bags and ABS from the standard equipment list. An air bag reportedly costs more than Rs.45,000 which will be hefty price difference for an entry level car.
Honda has never compromised with safety. Honda Siel's former CEO M Takedagawa had earlier said: “ When it comes to safety of the passengers, we make no compromises. Truly speaking, at Honda, safety is not an option."
Honda Siel Cars India will be announcing the pricing and variants of the Brio a few days before its launch in India. A Honda spokesperson has stated the Brio will be priced below the Rs.5 lakh mark. The carmaker is focussing on increasing localised procurement of parts to reduce the production cost of the Brio.
The launch of the Brio in India has been delayed by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. This delay could prove to be costly to Honda as more competition for the Brio will be hotter than the City and the Jazz as all carmakers have already launched their entry-level hatchbacks. Toyota Etios Live, Chevrolet Beat, Skoda Fabia and Maruti Suzuki Swift will pose a credible challenge to the Brio.
Increasing competition from Hyundai and Volkswagen has forced Honda to reduce the price of its best selling City Sedan. It recently launched the Jazz hatchback which costs Rs.1.75 lakhs cheaper than the previous model.
