Peugeot, the French car major began its Indian operations by conducting a ground breaking ceremony for its new plant in Sanand, Gujarat. The plant will be the carmaker's first plant in India and it is expected to be completed within the next three years.

Mr. Gregoire Olivier, Member of the Managing Board PSA Peugeot Citroën and CEO of Asian Operations, Mr. Vincent Rambaud, Director General of Peugeot and Mr. Frederic Fabre, Managing Director of PCA Motors India performed the bhoomi poojan and the ground-breaking ceremony.

On this occasion Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi said: “Gujarat is emerging as a Global auto hub. I congratulate Peugeot to be part of it. I take this opportunity to reiterate and reassure you of the longstanding commitment and dedication that we devote to this project."

The ground-breaking ceremony signifies an important landmark for the development of Peugeot"s India project which follows the State Support Agreement (SSA) signature held in Gandhinagar on September 1st, 2011. This new milestone is in line with Peugeot"s introduction schedule for its industrial and commercial settlement in India.

The future automotive and engine/gearbox plant will be constructed on an area of 600 acres, to which Peugeot will add a suppliers park for a global investment of Rs. 4,000 cores, approximately €650 million . This investment will add up to 5,000 new jobs for the automobile hub. In conjunction with this, Peugeot and the Gujarat state have the intention of creating an Automotive Skills Development Institute (ASDI) to be located within the Sanand Automotive cluster and contribute to its further growth and development.

The next step to be carried out over the coming weeks will include the completion of soil analysis, immediately followed by preliminary ground levelling works. The beginning stages of laying the foundation are scheduled subsequently.

Peugeot and Citroen are Europe's second highest selling car brands behind Volkswagen.
