Chevrolet, the inimitable American car brand is now a hundred years old. Chevrolet is celebrating its 100th Birthday today (November 3rd) and Drivespark joins the celebrations by listing out a few interesting facts about the American car brand.
- Founded by Louis Chevrolet and GM founder Billy Durant, Chevrolet became the car group's biggest brand and has remained so for a century. Its first car was the Series C Classic Six.
- Chevrolet was the first carmaker to pose a serious challenge to then Number One carmaker Ford.
- Chevrolet is lovingly called as Chevy all across the globe. The first Chevrolet cars entered India in 1928. There are still several surviving Chevys still on Indian roads.
- Chevrolet was merged with General Motors in 1918 and has been a major brand in GM. It was considered one of the three cheap car brands along with Ford and Chrysler.
- The influence of Chevrolet on cars increased in the 1950s with the arival of the Corvette sports car. The Corvettes is still a much loved car with the latest variant expected to hit markets soon.
- Chevrolet also heralded the birth of American muscle cars by building the Camaro in 1966. It was competing against the Ford Mustang, another muscle car.
- Chevrolet re-entered the Indian Market in 2003 and the country is now its eighth largest market in the world.
- Chevrolet gained a lot of publicity after its cars were used in the hugely popular Transformer series of movies.
- Chevrolet currently sells the Spark, Beat, Aveo, UVA, Tavera, Cruze and Captiva in India.
