Maruti's Manesar Strike Ends, Workers Sign Bond

Maruti Strike Ends
Maruti Suzuki has announced the end of the strike at its Manesar Plant after workers agreed to sign the good conduct bond the car maker had proposed in August. The Indian carmaker has also agreed to conditionally take back 18 trainees who were suspended during the strike but has added it would be taking disciplinary action against 44 permanent workers.

Maruti Suzuki's dealers and buyers can heave a huge sigh of relief after this announcement. Dealers were struggling to handle customers who were worried about the increasing waiting periods of the Swift.

The Strike at Manesar started on August 29th when Maruti Suzuki introduced a mandatory good conduct bond that was to be signed by the workers. Most of the workers refused to sign the bond and they were not allowed to enter the plant. This was followed by several protests and marches. Some of these protests also turned violent with workers attacking and severely injuring supervisors of the plant.

Maruti Suzuki tried to negotiate with the workers on several occasions but workers insisted that they would not budge until their suspended colleagues and trainees are taken back. Maruti Suzuki said it would not consider workers against whom it had already filed police complaints for violence in the plant.

Maruti Suzuki so far managed to have some production at Manesar by using temporary workers and engineers and supervisors from its Gurgaon. With the strike finally ending, we expect production to restart completely from Monday, October 3rd. It remains to be seen how Maruti Suzuki's management will try to recover the financial losses it has suffered from this month long strike.
