Sweden's Volvo Buses India Pvt Ltd's factory near Bangalore started the "go-slow" process in April. Half of the 550 odd staff at the bus factory went on a strike last week. This has resulted in a loss of $1.5 million in earning. A "go-slow" process is one wherein many employees work slower than usual while some refuse to work at all.

The reason for strike is due to the disagreement between workers and management over wages and also on the issue of reinstatement of 4 workers who were suspended by the company in April as a disciplinary measure. According to a company spokesman, the company has told its workers that they need not link the suspension issue with the wage negotiations. He further said that these are two separate issues and Volvo wants to go ahead with the wage agreement, which is one of the best in the industry.

Volve Buses India Pvt. Ltd is a 70-30 JV between Volvo and Azad Group. Annually, Volvo buses are sold at 500-600 units and the company started production in January 2008.

Labour issues sprangs up frequently. Recently, Hyundai had trouble with its labours and HMSI (Honda Motorcycles) saw a "go-slow" by its workers in Haryana plant of the Honda company. Now, its Volvo, which is facing trouble with its employees.

Globally, strikes of labours in countries like India and China is raising doubts as how these countries will cope up with having a status as low-cost manufacturing bases while avoiding growing discontent among employees.
