Skoda In The Fray Of Price War

This follows Hyundai"s strategy of reducing the price for its i20 by Rs20000 some six months ago. Skoda believes that the price revision may create a commotion in the Indian car market and it may yield more sale volume of Fabia. The company intends to impress its presence in the domestic compact car market which possesses the highest volume so far. Hence to counter the competitors in this segment, Skoda has effected the price rise, said its director for sales and marketing in India.
With this reduction, the entry-level Fabia"s cost will be Rs4.35 lakh from the earlier price of Rs5.02 lakhs for petrol version and it will be Rs5.4 lakh for diesel from the previous price of RS6.5 lakh. He explained that Skoda aims for securing 3-5% of the compact car segment where Maruti and Hyundai rule. But the interior part of the car has a single airbag and has no music play fitting in the car. Skoda"s attempt to penetrate the compact car segment with its Fabia did not succeed due to the heavy pricing against the ones from Maruti Swift and Hyundai i20.
The worst situation came when VW"s Polo entered into the segment which was still cheaper than Fabia (incidentally the first ever attempt by VW to price a product below that of Skoda). Fabia had to counter the run of Hyundai i20, Maruti Ritz and new WagonR, VW Polo, Ford Figo and GM Beat. Skoda had received just 2820 units in the first six months of this fiscal @470 monthly units.
