Car Makers Will Disclose Fuel Efficiency - SIAM

By By: Vicky.in

SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) has announced that all the members will disclose the fuel efficiency ratings of their vehicles compared with their competitors from October 2010.

According to SIAM's President Pawan Goenka, SIAM has announced the scheme for voluntary fuel efficiency labeling for vehicles and this label, which will be implemented from October 1, 2010, would provide information to consumers on the comparative fuel efficiency of vehicles in different categories. He added that the consumers will be allowed to make the right choice of vehicles depending on their individual needs and would encourage and promote lower fuel consumption. He mentioned that the auto industry was initially reluctant to tell about the mileage figures, but now it is prepared to disclose.

As a first step, Goenka said that SIAM invites the government to formally adopt the mandatory requirement and the industry if willing and ready to accept the mandatory fuel efficiency standard. The government has stated that a mandatory fuel efficiency standard for auto makers will be introduced under the Energy Conservation Act by the Power Ministry.

Vehicle manufacturers have been revealing the mileage figures of their vehicles since last year, which is a key factor in attracting the consumers, as well acts as a parameter to know the technology expertise of the car-makers when the cars have better mileage than competition.
