Will Proton enter into Indian Auto market this time?

Proton is a Malaysian automobile manufacturer headquartered in Shah Alam, Selangor is eyeing on Indian auto space for launching its cars through an Indian auto major. Proton had talks with Mahindra & Mahindra for a partnership in 2007, but it was not fruitful and Proton started approaching a contract manufacturer Argentum Motors for a possibility of manufacturing its cars in the defunctional Daewoo Motors Indian plant at Surajpur.

Neither of the companies have confirmed this news, but according to sources, a prospective partnership will likely to happen soon between Mahindra and Proton. Earlier, Proton was linked with contract manufacturer Argentum Motors, which acquired the manufacturing unit of the defunct Daewoo Motors India at Surajpur, for a possible tie-up.

According to the annual report of Proton group in 2009, the company will focus on high growth regional markets in ASEAN for the CBU(Completely Built Up) market, as well as China, India and Iran for the CKD(Complete Knocked Units) market. The sources said M&M could provide Proton support in the assembly of CKDs.

Proton has identified India having a robust auto sales in spite of the economic crisis and hence it will make all efforts to reach out for Indian auto market through its cars like the Exora, Savvy and Saga.

Proton, apart from establishing itself in the local market is looking out for possible exports market under the Asian Multi-Local OEM (AMLO) strategy which comprises of China, India and AEAN and the Middle East North Africa (MENA).
