Passenger Car Market Hike In India
The study observed that the passenger car market has reaped the use of polypropylene to the tune of 70000 metric tons in 2009 which is expected to rise to 185000 metric tons in another 6 years. The projection is based on the proposed entry of Bajaj and Tata into the segment with their new models, said the research analyst of Frost&Sullivan. With India gradually transforming into a hub for the export of passenger cars, the segment seems to make a penetrating effect. Tata, for its part, has been exporting its passenger vehicles for the past five years while Nissan and Hyundai too joining the fray with large numbers. These companies manufacture their small cars in India and export to potential markets. The quantity of polypropylene used in India is somewhat lesser than applied in other countries which may see a reversal with the entry of world leaders like VW. Currently the level of polypropylene used in a passenger car in India is 35kgms which is likely to go up to 55kgms. However, the field is not free from a sort of challenging tasks as from the fluctuating prices of crude oil which constitutes the price of the material. The fate of polypropylene depends much on this cost factor which otherwise direct the OEMs to opt for an alternative source for making auto components.
There has been at an unstable level in the price of crude oil for the past two years making frequent fluctuations. During 2010, the price of crude oil was per barrel in January which rose to within three months but came down to in July. In August it again rose as a result of major global players like GM, BMW and VW opting for more volume of polypropylene to meet the specifications of safety and enviroprotection. The upward trend in the cost of the vehicles was due to this large scale employment. Of course, these are not yet made mandatory, but the global companies have got their own standards of anticipated future needs. Hence there are possibilities of employing equally large scale polypropylene by local players in coming years. In the meantime, innovations are on to apply refined technology in the use of polypropylene as in the case of a Japanese car maker who is designing a second-generation bio-plastic based on this material . for this non-edible cellulose rich plants are used while other method involves usage of self-reinforced polymers which is capable of relinquishing filler.
Once these technologies work out well, the market for polypropylene will be at its best. If the Indian polypropylene resin makers are to survive well collaboration with OEMs will be the need of the hour. By this the existing practice of importing various graded polypropylene can be saved amidst the advantage over anti-dumping levies.
