Maruti cars to go greener by using CNG!

By Priya Devi

India's largest selling car, Alto, second largest selling car, the Maruti WagonR and the luxury sedan Maruti SX4 will be notable models of Maruti which will go green with the option of CNG(Compressed Natural Gas) compatible engines from 2010. This is a giant leap towards a eco-friendly attitude by the country's No.1 car manufacturer Maruti.

Maruti has an impressive 50% market share especially in the small cars segment. Thanks to its frugal engineered attractive priced, reliable cars. Now, in order to continue this momentum, the company will sell the CNG variants of these vehicles and whose prices will be 15-20% more than the petrol variants. Maruti will provide these cars with factory fitted safer CNG kits.

Rao, Managing Executive Officer (engineering) at Maruti Suzuki has said that Maruti has answered to go green with the CNG technology. The company is also developing an in-house i-GPI(intelligent Gas Port Injection)technology wherein the customers will get the benefit of driving the car either on CNG or on petrol. Mr Rao also announced that Maruti is the only car maker to provide factory-fitted computer controlled gas distribution system to be integrated into the petrol engines using injectors to fire gas directly into engine eliminating any loss of power.

In India, car makers like the Chevrolet, Hyundai are producing cars with alternate fuels including the CNG. For instance, GM Spark and Hyundai Accent runs in CNG, but the loss of 15% of power is inevitable with the older technology. But if Maruti uses its i-GPI, this loss will be avoided and hence its CNG cars will be more efficient than the competitors. Maruti has wisely tapped in CNG as a fuel for its i-GPI engines because it is cheaper than electric power as well as hybrid engines, say the cost of Toyota Prius powered by Hybrid costs more than Rs. 28 lakh.

Maruti is already outscoring than other car makers and its CNG powered cars will only enhance the sales. On the other hand, its right time for all car manufacturers to go greener by manufacturing lesser polluting vehicle along with the support of Government in providing subsidies for buying greener cars
