Old Vehicle Owners May Have To Pay Green Tax In Maharashtra!

Generally, 15 years is considered as a life time for a vehicle. And, the older the vehicle, the less fuel efficient and therefore more pollution comes from the vehicle . This initiative will check the usage of old vehicles and therfore help reduce the pollution.
Changes would be made in the Mumbai Motor Vehicle Tax Act of 1958 to accommodate the new tax and the Cabinet has taken this decision to discourage owners from using old vehicles.
The Government has decided to impose tax as follows. Private owners who use old diesel powered cars must pay Rs.3500 for 5 years and the owners who use old petrol cars must pay Rs.3000. The two-wheeler riders must pay Rs. 2000 if they use more than 15 years old bike/scooter.
In the commercial segment, LCV owners need to pay Rs. 2500 and Taxi (6 seat) operators must pay Rs. 1250. For non-CNG auto rickshaws, it would be Rs. 750 for five years. The tax structure for heavy commercial vehicles would be based on their load carrying capacity.
According State Government's press statement, the green tax money, which will be collected from the motorists would be spent into for pollution control initiatives, clean fuel and for creating better testing and certifying infrastructure for vehicles.
Its right time for the other State Governments to levy environmental tax in their respective states so as to discourage owners from using 'more polluting older vehicles' which will eventually help in reducing environmental pollution.
Equally, Govt, must help in providing alternate fuels like LPG and CNG and make steps to encourage people to buy LPG, CNG and battery powered vehicles which are more greener and eco-friendly. With India's economic boom and ever increasing auto market, its right time for the Indian Government to ensure the eco-balance of the country for a better future.
