Karun Chandhok, The First To Drive On Korean F1 Circuit
After taking the demonstration drive, Karun stated that the Korean track had a good mix of corners and that the track had an interesting layout. He added that the racers may see a lot of overtaking in the first sector and there are long straights into slow hairpins. The straight after turn one and two is really long, so racers may see some good slip streaming there, like in Shanghai. From turn seven onwards, there"s a fast section of flowing corners all the way back to the start-finish line.
Karun Chandhok felt that, looking at the facilities, the garages and team buildings look pretty much finished and they are big and he thinks teams will need to bring around 30% more furniture to fill them.
He added that the grandstands also look reasonably finished and the track itself needs a bit more work on the asphalt and the kerbs, but the organisers think it"s all within their time-lines and are confident that it will be ready on time. He further added that the location was nice, and they were overlooking the sea.
The Korean Grand Prix will start in less than seven weeks from now. But, the preparations appear to be working on behind the schedule. For instance, number of buildings are yet to be finished, many of the grand stand seats are missing, a final layer of asphalt is yet to be laid down on the track itself and the main entrance is also incomplete.
The Racing arena has insufficient parking and uneven supply of water and electricity. KAVO, co-developer of the circuit, insists that the world will see a historic moment fifty days from now. KAVO's CEO, Yung-Cho Chung, added that everyone has been a bit doom-and-gloom about it, but everything is under control and they can finish before the opening of the event.
The inauguration ceremony has been an excellent opportunity for the KAVO to fine-tune the facilities ahead of next month"s grand prix, and Chung said that it was exciting to see how enthusiastically the Korean International Circuit has been received by Korean residents.
