Japanese And Chinese Truck Makers In India
According to dealers and auto industry experts, the top executives of the Japanese and Chinese commercial vehicle makers have already been visiting India and discussing with potential dealers to set up JVs or entering distribution and marketing tie-ups with firms.
Hino Motors, which is part of the Toyota group has imported roughly 200 premium-range vehicles which are to be priced at Rs. 35 lakh per units. These vehicles are targeted for mining and infrastructure segment. Hino Motors is looking to set up a factory in India.
Hino Motors has got a big market share, especially in South-East Asian and Middle East markets which has products across the spectrum such as 'Dutro', 'Dyna' and 'Hino' 16-49 tonne. Isuzu is trying to find out possibilities of launching smaller commercial vehicles and buses.
Foton, the chinese truck maker has competitively priced models in low-to-mid range 'Forland' series. It is already planning to directly enter the Indian commercial vehicle sector by building a factory in Pune. FAW has a JV with Ural India in making of buses and manufacturing dumpers, low-floor buses and trucks. SAIC, through its JV with General Motors India, will be rolling out its 'Wuling' range of trucks in India by next year.
The Indian truck market has a great demand potential. For instance, the 50% growth in April-July period to a little above 2 lakh units and an speculated growth of 8-10 lakh units in March 2011 end makes India the destiny for any commercial player. The global markets are facing a saturation in demand and also, the freight market in India is a fast-growing one too, making India, a favourable place for commercial vehicle firms to establish and grow their business in our country.
While the new companies foray will surely heat up the commercial sector, Indian players, Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors, Mahindra and Volvo-Eicher are witnessing a growth period in the recent past which will likely to continue in the upcoming years too. The sales of medium and heavy vehicle sales have jumped 74% to 95,784 units and LCV sales were up by 33% to 1.05 lakh units. If the Chinese and Japanese firms start rolling out their products, the local firms could face a stiff competition.
