Hyundai Motors Chennai Plant, back to normal production

By Priya Devi

After excluding the striking workers from the factory, the Korean Auto maker, with its rest of the work force has resumed its normal production of cars in the Chennai plant.

Earlier, on Monday, a minority of workers engaged in a strike, demanding the re-appointement of all the 87 workers who were dismissed last year. Hyundai Motors signed a MOU with State Govt, Tamilnadu, for reappointing 20 out of the 87 dismissed works. This was agreed after individual reviews. But then, the workers who went for strike needed the remaining 67 workers to be appointed by the company.

Inspite of the company officials making best efforts to talk and negotiate with the workers, the strike was continued. A loss of Rs. 2200 crores was estimated by the company due to this strike, and hence Hyundai had to continue its production to cut further losses.

Hyundai Motors in Chennai Irungatukottai factory is one of the largest plant outside of Korea, employing 10000 people. Hyundi Motors manufacturers Santro, i10 and i20, Accent and also exports its cars worldwide from this plant.
