Hyundai Santa Fe SUV To Be Launched
According to Arvind Saxena, director, (marketing & sales), Hyundai Motor India stated that Hyundai will launch Santa Fe in October-November, ahead of the festive season. Saxena added that if volumes pick up, then Hyundai India will consider assembling the vehicle here in its Chennai plant. He also said that Hyundai is intending to give significant focus to premium product category with the launch of the Santa Fe and then follow it up with other models.
The seven-seater SUV, as against the earlier five-seaters, will be powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine, and initially the company plans to import it as completely-built units.
Hyundai's attempt to repeatedly grab the SUVs have been shattered so far because of poor sales. Hyundai's Terracan and Tucson bombed in Indian auto market, which forced the Korean car maker to withdraw these vehicles.
Hyundai has been a key player in the small car segment as its Santro and i10 sells more than 7000 units every month. But, its premium vehicles such as Sonata and Elantra have not achieved success like the small cars. Hyundai may bring the new Sonata by this year end.
In India, the SUV segment is the fastest growing segment with a growth of 18-20 percent in the premium cars category. Toyota Fortuner is the best example which has grabbed attention of many SUV lovers in India and the booking numbers have stunned even Toyota. If Hyundai Santa Fe needs to grab success, it has to face stiff competition from Toyota Fortuner. New launches such as Skoda Yeti, Nissan Murano will also join the race along with Honda CR-V, Chevrolet Captiva, Ford Endeavour, Nissan X Trail, Mitsubishi Outlander.
While the grown-up countries have a saturated SUV market as both people as well as manufacturers focus on small fuel-efficient small cars, developing countries like India, is the hope of car makers to sell their bigger vehicles such as SUVs.
