Hyundai's Diesel Engine Plant In India

The world"s fourth largest car maker Hyundai said it is setting up a diesel engine plant in India at an investment of Rs 400 crore. This, according to Hyundai, is to meet the intended demand for its products in coming years in India. With the car manufacturing plant in Chennai, Hyundai is yet to locate and finalize the site for this diesel engine plant with the output of 1.5 lakh annual units.

The Hyundai motor"s MD said the company is more concerned with reducing the export units to concentrate more in the domestic market. This will be feasible once the engine plant comes to operation, he added. For its i20, Verna and certain other models, the diesel engines are derived from its Koran plant.

With the anticipated growth in the domestic market, hyundai is aiming to erect the third diesel engine plant after getting the consent from its apex body. The strategy to penetrate the domestic market by allocating 65% in 2011 which is an increase from the sale of 3.56 units in India. This accounts for 60% of the net annual production in India. Though the company saw the decline of 8.5% in export in this year, it has gained 24% in the domestic market, said the company"s Director for marketing and sales. In addition the company is bringing out a still smaller car than its Santro and would add to the portfolio in both domestic and overseas market, said the MD and CEO.
