Honda car not for the mass volume, expect a premium price!

By Suparna Chakaraborthy

The proposed city car that was exposed during the 2010 Delhi Auto Expo and which created many excitement among the Honda fans, might get little disappointed by Honda's decision to pitch the car above the mass volume market.

Most of the Indian cars are between the Rs. 2 lakhs to Rs. 4 lakhs range, thanks to the huge economically conscious driven middle class people's mindset. If this is the case, then why Honda is not trying its hand in this segment?

Well, the reason is that Honda Motor Corporation Chief Operating Officer (Asia and Oceania) Fumihiko Ike has reported that their cars, historically, have always been priced higher.

The COO also confirmed that the upcoming car has been developing as per the schedule and there won't be any sedan variant of this small car.

Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) is targetting to launch the city car in 2011 and will be priced about Rs. 5 lakhs.

The COO also reported that the diesel variants that Honda provide in other countries might come to Indian based on the market needs and said Honda is not a volume player. Also, Honda is focusing on localisation of 80% of its small car.

Honda is strong in India because of its successful Honda City, Accord and CR-V, while the Jazz hatchback did average business due to the premium pricing.
