The Indian government is extending a gesture to promote hybrid and electronic vehicles to protect environment. Under this, The National Electric Mobility Mission is launched with an allocation of Rs200 crore for assisting the auto industry. The makers then can avail this incentive based scheme to bring out eco-friendly units.

The official in the Heavy Industries said that the government has taken stock of the situation about the poor infrastructure in several auto makers who concentrate on hybrid and electric versions. The Mission will promote utility of alternative fuels- in the form of eco-protection and will eliminate the petrol and diesel variants. The move will help prevent air pollution too. The government"s move is to assist the auto makers to reduce the cost of battery which normally constitutes one third of the unit price.

The Mission will have the officials from various ministries of Road, Transport and Highways, Environment &Forests, and Science and Technology. The incentives will be accrued by way of a access on automobiles and funds from several schemes covered under urban development.
The fancy of electric vehicles is not upto the mark due to its high cost due to expensive battery and technology involved.

The electric version of two wheelers has the installed capacity of 10 lakh annual units but only 10% of it has the sale volume. Reva Electric of Bangalore has the run of just 100 units of electric cars in the country. Similar situation exists in the camps of Toyota and Honda who failed to impress with their hybrid and electric versions. However, there is an increase in the demand for cars by 34% and 27% in bikes during the last five months of 2010.
