Workers In GM India’s Halol Facility

By By: Vicky.in

The strike-hit production at the Halol facility of General Motors India resumed the work putting end to a four-day strike. The striking workers were demanding higher wages but GM could resume the production without any pre-condition for that. GM stressed the resumption as the top priority for further negotiations. The company"s VP said that the workers are at their wish to have any sort of negotiations in the event of continued production. He claimed that the workers are at the erring move as theirs is not a recognized union, thereby making the strike illegal.

Further, the labor authorities of the state government justified the large pay structure offered by GM, which is still higher than the industry average. Since October 29, the production of nearly 150 vehilces a day was suspended as the group of 900 labors proceeded on strike. However, the VP claimed that as a result of this strike the net production loss amounted to 450 units.

The facility is equipped to run on three shifts to deliver 85,000 annual units but at present there are only two shifts sharing two equal amount of day basis production. In addition to the confirmed labors numbering 900 there are 100 contracted staff who refrained from the strike.

The Halol facility is looking after the production of Aveo-UVA hatchback, Aveo entry-level sedan, sedan Cruze, MUV Tavera and mid-sized sedan Optra. This facility is in addition to the one at Talegaon which has the installed capacity of 1.4 annual units comprising Spark and Beat. This facility too has the second shift for balancing the demand need. GM India has received good shower of its business in October by selling 10051 units against 7413 units in the corresponding month of 2009 making the rise to 35.59 percent.
