General Motors India has revealed its plans of launching new models in the next 2 years. GM will bring 2 LCV (Light Commercial Vehicles) and 3 cars from its Chinese Partner SAIC to India.

According to Karl Slym, the President and Managing Director of GM India, the company is looking at two LCVs and three passenger vehicles from their partner's stable as well as what comes from GM. GM's Talegaon will produce the upcoming cars of GM and the commercial vehicles are planned to be produced from Halol plant.

Although, the particular model names and specifications are yet to be announced, Sunshine MPV (like Maruti Eeco) will make its entry into India. According to sources, GM is likely to aggressively price the Sunshine MPV so as to fetch a bigger bunch of customers who are looking for an affordable Multi Purpose Vehicle under the Rs. 5 lakh price.

GM is likely to introduce all these products under the well established Chevrolet brand in India. GM will also planning to introduce the Wuling pick-ups of the SAIC model as a Chevrolet product.

GM wil look for expanding its portfolio by bringing passenger cars which are value for money. GM-SAIC might together bring a small car with an on-road price of Rs. 2 - 2.5 lakh. If GM could produce this car, it will strengthen its small car line up in India along with the successful Beat and Spark.

Also, GM can strongly compete with Hyundai, which is also making a small car in the 2 - 3 lakh range. By 2011, both the cars will heat up the competition.

According to GM's MD, the American Car Giant is focusing on tier 2 and 3 centres and open 60% of its new dealerships. Since, the semi-urban and rural consumers are also willing to buy new brand cars, GM has aggressive plans to do business in these regions.

Mr Slym said GM India was now focusing aggressively on tier 2 and 3 centres, which would be home to at least 60 per cent of the company's new dealerships. Automakers have realised that these cities and towns offer tremendous business potential. Customers here are also open to new brands.
