General Motor's Entry Into LCV Sector

General Motors is all geared up to enter into the LCV market in India with the launch of cargo and passenger vehicles in 2012. The company"s GM for India said that the move is getting shape with the technical assistance from its Chinese partner SAIC.

General motors is all set to enter the rapidly growing Indian light commercial vehicle (LCV) market and will launch cargo and passenger versions by early 2012. He added that the company"s Halol facility will be utilized for the purpose and it will be treated as a hub for LCV. There will be vehicles from both version of fuel - diesel and alternate fuels.

With an investment of Rs250 crore for this expansion activity the production capacity will increase to 1 lakh annual units comprising the majority of commercial vehicles. He added that there will be 1-tonne payload pick-up and there will be 5-10 seater vans.

Both these type of vehicles will be fitted with engines of 1.5 lit derived from the power train of Talegaon. General motors is likely to counter Tata Ace by setting up an exclusive dealer network for its LCV by retaining the car sales network separately due to the difference in customer potential, he asserted.
